The Victoria and Albert Museum celebrate London’s Eighties’ club scene this summer…

The museum’s major summer retrospective has been announced – get those statement shoulders and Day Glo Spandex at the ready for Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s.

Exploring and indeed celebrating the impact that the club scene in Eighties London had on international fashion, the exhibition will showcase revolutionary designs from the likes of John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood, as well as typical clubwear of the time, from Fetish to Goth, New Romantic to Rave.

Club to Catwalk will also feature nine of 22 Levi Strauss & Co denim jackets which were commissioned by Blitz club magazine in 1981 to various London-based designers – Paul Smith, Katherine Hamnett Zandra Rhodes, Betty Jackson, Jasper Conran et cetera – to revamp. First displayed in the V&A in 1986 and auctioned off in aid of the Prince’s Trust, the museum is currently searching for the remaining missing 13 jackets.
